This document allows you to prove your Canadian citizenship. You can apply if you want:

• Pass on your Canadian citizenship to a child born outside of Canada
• Provide a document that proves you are a Canadian citizen (if you need to apply for a passport, job, pension, or social security number)
• Replace a lost, destroyed, or stolen certificate
• Update your certificate (for example, if you have changed your legal name)

Eligibility criteria

Canadian law will grant citizenship to foreigners who meet the following eligibility criteria to be Canadian:

  • Be 18 or older on the day you sign the application
  • Be a permanent resident of Canada
  • Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the five years before applying
  • You may need to file personal income taxes for at least three years
  • Adequate proficiency in English or French
  • Knowledge of Canada with the responsibilities and privileges of the Canadian citizenship
